Comme des Garcons and Moncler Mark Latest Collaboration

March 26, 2010

Comme des Garçons and Moncler on Wednesday marked the birth of their latest collaborative effort: A temporary store in Tokyo’s upscale Aoyama district. “We have a long history with Moncler,” said Comme des Garçons chief executive officer Adrian Joffe, who was there with Rei Kawakubo and Moncler president Remo Ruffini. “And since this is an event store, we’re always looking for somebody to do a project with.”

The space previously housed Comme des Garçons’ one-off retail ventures with Louis Vuitton and Japanese Vogue. Ruffini remarked that the collection is the perfect marriage of the two companies. “It’s a mix between us and Rei…It’s something very unusual, very new,” Ruffini said.

Comme des Garçons’ Moncler 365, which is aptly named since it will be open for exactly one year, features an almost entirely black product lineup. The goods include Moncler styles that have been customized by Comme des Garçons, such as a nylon jacket with knit squares on the pockets, which goes for 105,000 yen, or about $1,147 at current exchange. Moncler products handpicked by Kawakubo, an edited selection of Comme des Garçons pieces and a selection of products from other brands are also on offer. Come July, the store will stock a complete collaboration collection designed by Kawakubo and made by Moncler. “We think the fall collection will be even better,” said Ruffini. “It’s much more Moncler.”

The majority of the collection will only be available at the Aoyama store, although select items will be on sale at London’s Dover Street Market from April 9. “I think the collection will be received very well,” said Joffe. “People are already very upset that they can’t get it anywhere else.”
